“I like my life!”

I know this video of an enthusiastic 4-year-old named Jessica doing her daily affirmations in the bathroom mirror has long since gone viral but I want to share it here because it makes me smile.  AND I’ve discovered that if you try to emulate her amazing enthusiasm in front of your bathroom mirror (including swinging your arms, although maybe don’t climb up on the counter) it will make you laugh out loud and feel amazing! I encourage you to try it!

Teaching Children Affirmations

baby mirror kissIf we are a parent or have children in our lives as nieces, nephews, students or children of our friends, we have a great opportunity to role-model how doing affirmations helps us to feel better about ourselves.

Self-love nurtures self worth, which is the essential building block for all healthy relationships with others. I believe that a wholesome sense of self worth not only improves people’s lives, it helps save them from unhappy lives. We all need to realize our own worth and to cherish our lives.

On this important topic of doing affirmations for and with children, I am delighted to share two amazing bloggers and the wonderful crafts they have made.

Jamie is a delightful blogger and I encourage you to visit her wonderfully inspiring craft blog.

She writes: “Every gift, every feature, every circumstance in our lives is hand picked especially for us by the Lord.  We need to remind our children of this daily!
“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.”  Psalm 139:13
I am so often drawn to this verse; it helps me to understand that He made me and that I am His.”

Jamie’s helpful photos and text will walk you through how to make an inspiring poster like this for yourself. Or visit her etsy shop and she’ll make one for you! Also, her custom wedding song lyrics would look wonderful in any newlywed couple’s home, both on and long after their big day. Way to go Jamie!

300 affirm I Am - feedingsparrowsI discovered Jamie and her Creative Imperative through the delightful blog at Feeding Sparrows, and specifically this post on making Affirmation Signs. This inspiring mother of three has a wise and generous spirit and writes often about the importance of doing affirmations. There is much to read and enjoy on her blog, even if she hasn’t added a new post in a while. I can certainly relate to how busy life gets, even if my children are no longer young like hers are!

I encourage you to visit her site, especially this post about Why Affirmations. It’s wonderfully well written about why teaching children about doing affirmations is essential to helping raise healthy, happy individuals. Her concluding statement here is amazing:
“I believe it is so important that we teach our children how to ‘choose’ the right thoughts from an early age. Just think of the love and peace we would have all over the world if every child was taught the importance of doing daily, positive, affirmations! They truly can create miracles!”

For every set she sells, one set is given to a non-profit children’s organization! The affirmation bracelets have these affirmations:

  • I am loved. I am brave. I am creative. (red lettering)
  • Every day I get better and better. (orange lettering)
  • Today is the best day ever. (green lettering)
  • Think. speak. be positive. (blue lettering)
  • I am a good friend. (purple lettering)

While I do not know either of these bloggers except for frequent enjoyable visits to their blogs, I offer heartfelt gratitude to both Jamie and Allyson with an encouraging cheer to keep up the good work! All the work you do as you shower your own children with love, and then share about it on your blogs, helps make a huge difference in our world because we all need role models. Thanks for showing some of the ways of how you do it. God bless you.

Affirmation Cards

We can train our brain. I know because I learned how to stop worrying. To worry is to use the creative force of our imagination destructively. This error can be corrected by recognizing that we’re thinking negatively, choosing to stop and replacing those thoughts with positive ones.

“An affirmation is everything you say and think. Every thought you think and every word you speak is an affirmation. All our self-talk is a stream of affirmations. You are using affirmations every moment whether you know it or not. You are affirming and creating your life experiences, with every word and every thought.” ~Louise L. Hay

It sounds simple, and actually it is. Yet this simple step has powerful effects. For myself, I discovered freedom from the fear that worry creates. Thinking positively instead of negatively reduces stress and has health benefits. It’s worth giving it a go and it’s easy with positive affirmation cards. They’re a great way to help train our brain to think consistently kind and positive thoughts. Placing positive “I AM” statements around our world supports a healthy habit: the habit of thinking positively. Cards are something we can make ourselves, or we can purchase ones such as these examples by Louise Hay.

Tape them to the side of the computer monitor, on the bathroom mirror, on the fridge, on the kitchen window, set some on the bedside table and in a stack on the coffee table, set a few in the car, tape them up in the garage. Place them anywhere you’ll see them. Move them to new places. Get creative!

300 affirm i relax and enjoy

Seeing these uplifting sentences stating the positive in the present moment raises our spirits. I’ve been told that just visiting someone who has positive affirmations up around their home is uplifting. I’m not surprised. Thoughts are things so let’s choose wisely. I know this from experience for I’ve learned how to replace worry with positive expectancy and it’s so incredibly freeing that I highly recommend it!

“I vow to let go of all worries and anxieties in order to be light and free.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh

Louise Hay has different styles of affirmation cards to consider, such as the I CAN DO IT CARDS and the artistic POWER THOUGHT CARDS. Remember that this new habit doesn’t have to cost a cent, as we all have paper and pens. Use these examples to write your own affirmation cards.

Consider Love Notes

“It is the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen.” ~ Claude M. Bristol

positive post its mirrorWhile it is genuinely affectionate to slip love-notes into the pockets or lunches of our nearest and dearest, it is truly inspired when we remember to do this for ourselves. ‘Love-notes’ as I like to call them, or Positive Post-it’s, Mirror Affirmations, whatever we name them, are a way to send a message to a deeper part of ourselves.

Just like when we happen across a hidden note sent from a loved one, so too are the notes we leave for ourselves delightful reminders of how truly loveable we really are.

Sure any old hand-written scrap of paper can suffice for a note, but it means so much more when we put some special effort into it, such as selecting a nice paper and carefully using our best handwriting (or a really nice font if we print the note). And this can be an instance when shorter is better. Short and sweet.

Way to GO!
You Light Up My Life.
I’m So Glad You Were Born!
You Make A Big Difference In MY World.
Thank you for all you do. Thank you for being you!

i am enoughPositive and life-affirming statements help spread love and light. Certainly for others and definitely when we send these messages to ourselves! Here are some ideas for messages can we affirm and send to ourselves.

I am enough.
I speak and think positively.
I am thankful for my blessings.
I am calm, relaxed and peaceful.
I am willing to change and grow.
I am deserving of love and kindness.
I enjoy being, feeling and thinking positive.

The most wonderful thing about thinking positive thoughts and feeling positive energy is that it’s self-perpetuating. Just thinking about the ‘bright side’ of every situation (and there is ALWAYS a blessing hidden like a silver lining of that dark cloud) helps to illuminate our hearts so we can ever more easily see the positive.

post it Smile! It’s like a mental ‘muscle’ that requires practice to build up strength and habit. It gets easier the more we practice. So let’s practice thinking positive thoughts, about our life, our situations, the people in our lives, and most especially about how we feel about ourselves. Let’s practice and build that muscle of kindness as we think positive thoughts. And a few little love notes to ourselves can only help.
