A Clean Slate

image todayThe energy we begin with sets the tone. This is true for how we start our day, how we begin a conversation, even the way we greet our own reflection in the mirror. When I bring my most enthusiastic energy to my mornings, I can more easily maintain this cheerful momentum than on those days when I forget and find myself dragging along. It’s harder to raise my energy after a slow start than to maintain it after a strong start.

Even when waking in pain, as I did this morning, let’s practice awareness of where our focus goes. As I woke with a backache, I playfully jested with the thought ‘at least I have a back’! Similar to someone who says ‘at least I’m alive’ when asked how they are doing, we can choose to remember that being here is better than the alternative. If we cannot be thankful for more, at least be thankful for being alive. Even this bare minimum is better than focusing on what hurts, what we’re lacking, and what isn’t working in our lives.

As we begin each morning with a focus on what we’re thankful for, we are starting with a fresh slate on which to create whatever we want! Give thanks for life! Give thanks for the good health you DO have. Even while having a backache anyone can choose to notice all the other functions of one’s body that are working wonderfully, and feeling gratitude for pain relief medications and availability of health care specialists such as chiropractors and massage therapists.

Thank You God 400The phrase “Thank you God for this day” is a mantra-like prayer I repeat as I fall asleep and when I wake. I encourage you to try it! There are countless reasons to be thankful and to celebrate each new day. Every morning is a clean slate, a blessed gift, a fresh opportunity for finding reasons to be grateful and joyful. The more frequently we can remember this immediately upon awakening, the brighter our days will shine.

  1. Thank you for the excellent reminder, Gina. I hope your back feels better soon. Your post reminds me of
a response I sometimes give when people ask how I’m doing at a time when I am experiencing great difficulty: “All things considered, I’m doing fine.”
    Grateful hugs,

    1. Thank you so much Russ. I like that: “All things considered”. My example above is from a past co-worker, and I think he must’ve not been doing very well to respond to ‘How are you’ with ‘I’m alive’. I remembered it for this post since I believe that even in rough times, like when we’re in pain, we can at the very least give thanks for being here. It is quite the bare minimum though! There really is so much to be thankful for, as you and I both enjoy writing about. 🙂 And I am doing much better, thank you.
      Hugs, Gina

  2. I try to remember that it is better to appreciate what I do have than to mourn what I don’t have. Thanks for the reminder to focus on the good things in our lives.

    1. It seems like such a simple step in a way, to simply focus on what we do have rather than what we don’t – but it makes all the difference. Thanks for your welcome visit and kind comment!
